Bushwalk and Community Dialogue with Ian Mason

Sunday August 29th

Writing Fiction for the 21st Century Walk 'n' Talk Review

Picture this.
Four people standing on uneven ground, under a small overhang beside a rickety bush path on a very steep picturesque slope of the Kuringai-chase National Park. Rain pouring down outside as we munched on carob buds and nuts, talking about writing fiction concerning the characteristics of life in future community.

You missed out because it was an absolute highlight that was shared by all as a bonding. It was pleasant because we found the overhang as soon as it started raining, before we got wet. And it was interesting because we had a passion for what we were on about.

Nearly ten people phoned before Sunday to say they were coming. Yet as a short storm poured on the train at Chatswood as I was travelling to the meeting point at Berowra, I wondered how many would actually front up. If any more than four people had turned up then we would not all have fit under the rock ledge, proof that the right amount of people actually turned up on the day. And it only rained once for thirty minutes near the start of the walk.

We talked about what writing we had already done, what we had published, what we wanted to do with our lives, and what successful community living in the future would entail so that we could write about it. We sowed the seeds for a book of short stories, from various authors, about living in a successful future, what life would be like when we all live in community, and agreed to get together and share our progress in a few months time.

The next Walk and Talk about Writing Fiction for the 21st Century will be
