Conversation at International House

June 15th 1999

An enthusiastic Conversation with Transport becoming the primary subject and Kirk showed up as a mine of good and interesting information.

We learned more about the Land and Energy efficiency of rail as opposed to land and energy inefficiency of road transport.

Interesting how much more resources are being invested in Road Transport. Something like a Billion dollars in going into the road between Newcastle and the Gold Coast.

A report to the RTA on Future Directions offered the opinion that over the next 20 years there is likely to be a 600% increase in congestion and 200% increase in pollution.

Some thoughts to come out about how we might improve the efficiency of road transport or bus use might be;

  • To aid predicability of buses, keep the T3 lanes clear and free of illegal use.
  • Explore something called "Dial a Ride" schemes
  • Encourage car pools and car co-operatives
  • Intelligent transport systems.

Want to hear of a great way to double the efficiency of your family car??

Are you ready for this?

Easy. Put two people in it. (Think about it.)

Much more was discussed such as land use, both residential and industrial and the effect of our strategies on transport.

The final thought though came out as something like this.

"Taking action is about the ONLY thing that will give us hope."
