Gosford  Senior Citizens Centre

June 30th 1999

When asked how they would describe this evenings conversation, people answered, "eclectic" and "diverse" and I would have to agree.

Especially diverse. It's amazing to me how much ground can be covered by such a small group. Perhaps that's because, being few in number, we had more airtime to cover wider territory.

The environment and ecological systems were addressed and in particular was the concern that our governance of our natural surroundings should be inclusive of people and the cultural development. In other words we are not served by "saving" everything without taking in to account that people are a part of the environment too.

Globalisation as it impacts our own culture was discussed at length. The observation was made that the globalising effect of agriculture does not take into account the fact that broad acre farming, wholesale irrigation, massive land clearing and even hooven live stock are not sustainable practices on such a large scale in this country. The word associated with many of our 'problems' is simply "Greed."

Building our sense of community and behaviours associated with a strong community are bound to address some issues we face such as crime. An important aspect is the benefit of taking the time to build relationships within the community.

An interesting question was posed. What is really the point to all of this activity before we have answered something far more fundamental for ourselves. That is, "Do we survive after death?"

Now there's a conversation and a half for you. Anybody game?

The next Conversation in Gosford will be on Thursday 5th of August 7.00pm.
